Thus, I have decided that I will try a more old fashioned way of weight loss, I would control and watch what I eat and try to be a bit more active than usual. For lunch I had a McDonald's cheeseburger meal, which I could easily finish with a few additional burgers on the side. For my dinner however, I ended up staying late in school because of the work I'm doing to prepare for finals week and ate in the Triple V buffet with Lex, Patrick and Ryan. I had a total of 3 dishes, but only about a total of 1 1/2 cups rice and more vegetables this time.

Easter Sunday

Its good to be back in Manila and as usual, my family had dinner out after mass. When I was asked what I want to eat, I said that I miss the food from Spices at the Manila Peninsula (where I still remember personally choosing to have my elementary graduation dinner back then). But my family decided to have it at People's Palace in Greenbelt instead. I was ok with this since they have good food as well, not to mention some similar dishes to those in spices such as their bagoong rice and crispy catfish salad. And for the other dishes they lack, they make up for with other good foods like their delicious (and spicy) curries.

HOLY WEEK

Its been a while since my last entry. This is because I had spent Holy Week with my family in Baguio. We went up Tuesday and I spent my last dinner in Manila in Cantineta in Pasong Tamo extension with my sister Kinny and my best friend Roselle.

While in Baguio, I had several dishes and ate in certain places that seem to be part of my family's Baguio tradition. We had our Bulalo with tons of fresh watercress for our Thursday lunch and ate in places like O-Mai-Khan and Carlo's pizza while we were there. And we had some new dishes with us along this trip as well such as my mom's friend's "kalitiran" and Cheers' now infamous tuna sandwich.

All in all, it was a pretty good trip with lots of good food to eat.

04/06/2006

Wow! I have been pretty busy lately and I have to admit that quite a lot has happened since my last entry. I was able to complete the first two weeks, which is the hardest part of the diet because it is the strictest. But I also decided to put a halt to my high protein diet once again. There are two main reasons that I stopped my diet. The first is what I consider wrong timing on my part. I chose fasting and abstinence for my lenten sacrifice every friday and it just proved to hard to stick to the diet during these Fridays. I have had headaches from hunger since I can only eat one meal, without meat (fasting and abstinence) and no rice, bread, pasta, etc...because of the diet.
The second reason is the difficulty of finding a place to eat which offers dishes that are allowed in the diet. I have been limited to KFC's original recipe chicken (w/o the gravy) almost everyday and it becomes sickening after a while. Truly, there is a lack of food/restaurant choices when one is out of the house. A sign for the need of a proper diet cafe, which I hope to personally put up soon.

03/17/2006

2nd Friday of Lent

Today is the second Friday of this lenten season and I really feel the sacrifice. I just realized today that I may have made a wrong choice in starting my diet just last Monday. Every Friday is turning to be a really hard sacrifice to follow. Fortunately, I have been successful so far.

I didn't have any solid food for lunch today, but I madeup for it through my liquid intake For my lunch, I had a bottle of iced milk coffee and a bottle of milk tea. For dinner though, I make up for a lot of missed food/s when I eat in Gerry's grill with my best friend Roselle. Together, the two of us shared: crispy crablets, crispy squid heads, oriental tuna sashimi, tuna sisig, pusit, adobong kangkong and tofu. Well, actually it didn't start out so well as food is concerned. All I had for lunch were a few slices of Kraft fat free mozzarella cheese slices, which I had bought from the grocery on my way to school.

Come evening however, we had been planning on watching the movie "V for Venetta" for quite a while now and we finally did tonight. It was just a shame that my best friend Roselle couldn't join us due to work fatigue. During the movie, I shared a large bucket of butter and another large bucket of cheese popcorn with my friends. At first, I was even hesitant on getting, but I was assured by a friend that the carb content of popcorn was minimal.

After the movie, 9 of us ate at Dencio's grill. I had my own order of their Sari-saring Sinugba, which is a dish containing different grilled foods. I finished a whole order on my own while the others shared on another order together with other foods like their best selling dish, sizzling sisig.

Once again, I made it a point to eat a lot (of meat) before midnight comes starting another Lenten Friday where I have to fast and abstain.

03/15/2006

The Madz Special

My lunch was just like any other day's, ordering from KFC a 2 pc. original recipe without the rice and gravy. As my own siding, I also had a bag of spicy peanuts from 7-eleven.

Dinner was a whole new experience altogether. Due to a series of events, I ended up accompanying my friend Madz today and she was kind enough to offer cooking me dinner...and boy was it good! The appetizer consisted of a home made salad complete with various greens, meats and feta cheese. The main course was fresh corned beef with horseradish, boiled cabbage and sliced potatoes and I just couldn't help but eat so much of this great cooking! Her choice of young corn as a siding was well placed as well, complimenting the corned beef. I got to meet her younger sister over dinner as well and so far, based on what I have seen, she comes from a very warm and friendly family. Today, thanks to the unexpected turn of events turned out a lot better (for me at least) than I could have ever expected.

03/14/2006

Tempura Day

Not much happened today as my second day on the low carb diet. I tried their chawan mushi (which is among the better ones that I have tried), miso soup and agedashi tofu. My friends also told me that their chicken and beef teriyakis were good as well. When I got home though, I still had two slices of t-bone steak with ground pepper, and no rice.

03/13/2006

DIET!

I finally get an opportunity to start dieting again. Although I am not able to follow the beginning of the low carb diet strictly, I am able to cut down on my carbohydrate intake greatly today. Most of my cheats today were more of sugar than that of actual carbs, meaning that if I am able to burn it off with some extra physical activity, then I shall be off to a decent start.

For lunch, I ate in the food area of GT Tower with my sister where we had mongolian. I had a bowl with a mix of beansprouts, carrots, cabbage, singkamas, peanuts, garlic, onions, sesame seed and oil, sweet and spicy sauces, beef, pork, chicken, squid and tofu. As noticed, I didn't put rice in my mongolian. It had a good mix of the sweet and spicy flavor from the sauce combination, which I usually have in my mongolian if not plain sweet.

For my afternoon snack, I had two small packs of peanuts from 7-eleven and a bottle of milk tea.

When I got home, I had four huge servings of pork liempo with vinegar and lots of garlic, but once again without rice.

Hopefully, I will be able to stay in my diet during the first phase (first two weeks) of my diet this time.

03/12/2006

Sunday = Family Day

Its Sunday once again, but I started the day not feeling well. I had a headache for most of the day (morning until afrternoon). I ended up eating some popcorn for lunch then falling back to sleep afterwards. Its a good thing I already heard mass yesterday, because I was not able to prepare for mass in time today.

After Mass, as every Sunday goes with my family, we eat out together: my mom, both my sisters and my brother-in-law. Today was even more special as both my neices were able to join us for dinner as well. We ate in Hap Chan, a Chinese restaurant near North Park in Makati Ave. As most Sundays go, we ordered a lot of food considering we're only 7 (and 2 of those are just kids). We had: 2 orders of siomai, a large order of their fried squid, an order of sweet & sour pork, eggplant hotpot, chinese noodles, Hong Kong style crabs, fried chicken and fried rice. I tried a little of each, but most of what I ate was their squid which is really good. It has a very crispy texture, cooked with sliced chili, but not too spicy and a semi sweet vinegar which go together pretty well. Afterwards, we went to The Fort to have dessert in FIC where I had 1 scoop strawberry and 1 scoop mango ice cream. I even bumped into my Taekwondo instructor during my varsity days in Ateneo, Sir Jobet Morales. And he's inviting me to train in Moro Lorenzo in Ateneo again, which is pressuring me to get back in shape ASAP!

03/11/2006

Splurging Continues!

Once again I ate a lot of food today! Its a mixture of classic foods as well as trying others for the first time.

For my lunch, I made up for the meat I miss from my Friday Lenten sacrifice so I passed the McDonald's drive thru in Fort Bonifacio and had four cheeseburgers and one double cheeseburger. I was slightly disappointed though because I like the preparation to be a bit more like the one I had from their Greenbelt branch where I had my dinner Thursday night. Their burgers for some reason do not have as strong a flavor as the one in Greenbelt, but it was pretty close and still good. In the afternoon, I passed by Greenbelt with my sister and remembered a suggestion from my friend, the Pesto Chicken wrap from Wrapwich. I tried it out while my sister ordered a fully loaded nacho from Chimara, which I have never tried as well. I expected more from the wrapwich, but the wasabi mayo on the nachos was pretty good so over-all I still enjoyed my meal.

For dinner, I went out again with my friends and ended up having dinner at Dax's house for the first time where we had spaghetti and some lechon kawali. The spaghetti was ok, but I've had better spaghetti sauce elsewhere. The nodles were cooked just right though. But I may still have enjoyed it more had there been cheese. The lechon kawali was great though, for thoses who love Filipino food I'm sure you can relate!

03/10/2006

First Lenten Friday

Fridays of lent are a real sacrifice to me. I always choose both fasting and abstinence every Friday for my Lenten sacrifice and for someone who really loves to eat it is a sacrifice indeed.

I always choose to have dinner as my only meal for the day since it is easier for me to have the option of eating any time of the day when I can't control my hunger any more rather than eating lunch then be hungry for the rest of the day. I only had one donut for brunch. I even got a headache from hunger and stress from our statistics lesson.

I had a great dinner though. I ate with my teacher and some friends at Harbor View restaurant. I was limited to eating non-meat while the rest of my friends had sizzling chicken and spareribs. I had some sushi for my appetizer and ended up eating the most among my friends. I only ate the adobong kangkong and the steamed fish, but I had 5 cups of rice (not including the rice from the sushi). They had pretty good sushi, with the ingredients pretty fresh. You can tell from the flavor and texture, which were just great. The fish was just like steamed fish in a good chinese restaurant with tender meat, but I really enjoyed their adobong kangkong. It was finely chopped, the first time I tried it prepared that way, which brought out its crisp texture even more.

I'm actually looking forward to our next time eating there!

03/09/2006

McDonald's Day!

Today's food consisted mostly of foods from or that can be found in McDonald's...very inadvisable for those who want to lose weight.

Though I started my day with another Joy black gulaman, which I just love because of its slightly gummy flavor, which I believe go pretty well with the chewy texture of its black gulaman bits, the rest of my food for today went pretty differently. I started the day having myself dropped off at McDonald's in the People's Support building instead of RCBC. I had a longganisa meal together with three orders of large fries. The longganisa has always been my favorite item in their breakfast menu (as well as Jollibee's) and the fries I got were just great! I had gotten a fresh batch of fries, which had the crunch which I just love when it comes to french fries. I had Patrick mix the salt for the first batch which turned out just right. I tried putting the salt myself for the second batch and it didn't turn out well, some parts were too heavily concentrated with salt while some parts were lacking. With the third batch, I had gotten slightly better.

A little later, I had some friends buy McDonald's and I had another batch of fries ordered for myself. This time, instead of salt, I remembered about the bacon and cheese flavoring in my bag and used that instead. It gave the fries a new flavor and later, made me buy two more new orders of fries in Hungry Hippo which I flavored with the same powder.

For my dinner, I once again passed the McDonald's drive thru in Greenbelt where I ordered Cheeseburgers. All in all, I had five cheeseburgers and two double cheeseburgers for my dinner throughout the night, I just couldn't get myself to stop eating it. All the ingredients compliment each other pretty well in this simple sandwich. The sweet flavor in the bread, together with the slight salty flavor of the cheese, the sweetness of the catsup mixed with the crunch of the finely chopped onions and the pickle slices (1 for the cheeseburger and two for the double cheeseburger) together with the oil they use which gives it its unique aftertaste. Though in proportioning, I still favor the regular cheeseburger over the double. Sometimes, simplicity is still the key.

Maybe my goal was also partially to prepare for the lack in meat I will have during my fasting and abstinence tomorrow.

03/08/2006

New Assignment

I have a new assignment starting today. Although I am not able to start my diet just yet, I am to observe the food I take in for the next week (until next Wednesday).

So far today, I have still not started my diet, but I have started increasing my physical activities once more. Yesterday, I had a long walk with my friends from Greenbelt to RCBC as I often used to do before. This morning, I had a badminton game with my friends Patrick and Alan and I must admit that I felt myself tire much more easily than I used to just a few months ago when I was still consistently active.

After the game, I didn't have much solids to eat, but I had a lot of the Joy black gulaman drink they sell at the badminton court. I like this drink very much because of its sweet flavor and its generosity in black gulaman bits. After, I had a few savoury hot peanuts, which I also enjoy munching on because of its consistency in crunch and flavor. Its spice is just right, not too hot yet spicy enough to make you drink after every few handfuls.

I had an overall sweet flavor throughout my dinner. I ate at Shangri-la Makati after watching the HSBC business plan competition finals. The food they served mostly, if not all had a sweet base flavor. The japanese bbq had a kind of teriyaki sauce, the spring rolls with a sweet and sour sauce, the bite size pastries with a sweet kind of jam, and their Iced tea. For dessert, I went with my friends to CPK afterwards where we had their chocolate brownie sundae.

03/07/2006

Walking Once Again

I was still not able to follow my diet for today. I had a total of two and a half snowboards from Country Style, which is an elongated donut with half bavarian cream and half chocolate filling topped with icing and sprinkles, together with two bottles of milk tea from Seven Eleven throughout the morning and lunch time. For a project study, I had an afternoon snack at the Big Chill Fresh Bar in Greenbelt at around 6 pm where I ordered a california maki salad and a large mango shake (which cost me a total of Php210.00). After Greenbelt, I walked back to RCBC with my friends Dax and Patrick, which takes about 25-30 minutes of walking. Finally, for my dinner, I had three orders of the 6 pc. chicken nuggets (w/ bbq sauce) from McDonald's with a large order of Coke Light. Hopefully, the walking makes up for some of the cheating I have been doing for the past few days.

03/07/2006

DIET DISASTER!

I haven't updated my blog for quite a while now. Its all due to mixed interferences in the form of occasions which have hindered me from starting my diet.

First was the cooking/eating/drinking party we had at Lex's house which might just be the last party we hold there. It was pretty much a success due to the large number of people who went. Chase, Cheers, Bianca, Roxy, Jam and myself did the cooking while the rest (Dax, Lex, Ibba, Billie, Rally, Camill, EZ, Theresa, Mike, Ryan, Venjo, Michiko and Mel) helped in the eating! Included in the dishes prepared were: the Cheers sandwich, the Sunshine pizza, Chase Carbonara and the Mike Curry!

Saturday was supposedly a despedida for a friend. We ended up having our own mini-version of the cooking party, then I ended up bringing my two friends to Kahlil's party in Alabang where I continued eating some more.

Sunday is a family day for me. I always have dinner out with my family after mass and this time we decided to have it in Gerry's Grill in Greenbelt. I just love their food, but its much better when I eat it with rice...especially their sisig with their garlic rice.

Monday, I had a long time friend come back for a visit after 17 years. We ended up welcoming them by treating them to the Dad's, Kamayan, Saisaki buffet in Glorietta and once again I ended up cheating my diet!

03/02/2006

Lent -Day 2

I had quite a heavy lunch today. I am making the most out of my last few days before going on another diet by eating the foods I feel I will miss the most. I had a chicken teriyaki bento together with a miso soup, both from Kitaro. For dessert, I had an eclair from Starbucks, which I just found out has just raised prices since my eclair, which used to be Php 65.00 is now Php 70.00.

For dinner, I had another round of the great tuna sandwich which I have just recently discovered. This is also part preparation for tomorrow since my classmates, friends and I are having a cooking party after school. Since it is a Friday though, I will be limited to dishes which are non-meat and I will have to avoid eating a full meal for lunch to keep to my fasting and abstinence sacrifice for the lenten season.

03/01/2006

Ash Wednesday

Its Ash Wednesday today! The start of Lent and a time for fasting and abstinence. It skipped my mind and I was fortunate enough to have another round of Cheers' healthy tuna sandwich for lunch. Another fortunate incident occured while I was hearing Ash Wednesday mass. The priest made a joke about fasting as eating faster, which reminded me all about it and I was able to skip dinner. Its a variation for tuna sandwich and its pretty healthy too! The only catch is that its friendly for the second and third phase of the low carb diet and the not so strict version of a vegetarian diet because of its whole wheat bread and tuna respectively. It is really good though, good enough to make me delay me from beginning the first phase of my low carb diet. I just have to have another taste of this newly discovered sandwich before restricting myself from any form of carbs.

02/27/2006

BACK TO SQUARE 1

Due to the effects which seem more of maintenance than weight loss, I have decided to repeat the strict two weeks of the low carb diet regimen. As much as I would like to try going on another diet right now, vegetarian maybe, to test for its effectiveness, its hard to find places to eat that cater to such a diet. I currently intend to restart the first phase of the low carb diet, but following it more strictly this time.

For ease in measuring purposes, I shall take a quick break from my diet and resume on the beginning of March, which is this Wed! I have alrady started with a carbo overload today starting with a #6 combo from Binalot (sisig, tenderloin tips, rice and sago't gulaman). This was later followed by by a belgian chocolate soy milk from Fruit Magic. Later, I had a beef bento box and chicken teriyaki from Kitaro with a snowboard from Country Style. For dinner, I had a 6-inch seafood sandwich from Subway, 3 oatmeal raisin cookies, a large Diet Pepsi and another stuffed donut from Country Style.

What a stuffing day, too bad it was not guilt free such as the "Get stuffed, guilt free!" meals to be served in D. My cheating caught up to me. After two weeks of undergoing the strictest phase of the diet, together with an increasing number of cheating towards the end, I finally stepped on the scale once more. I lost weight during my first weekend weigh-in where I went down to 214 from my original 217 when I started. With my cheats during the latter parts, I was a bit nervous to check my weight again.

I know I was supposed to make my entry last night, but I got home late from my usual Sunday family dinner and was too tired. I was able to weigh though. When I finally stepped on the scales once again it turned out, I paid the price for cheating, but it was balanced out by the hardships I endured. I was at 215, pretty much maintaining my weight from my first weekend.

This was weight I took right after a heavy dinner at Hap Chan with my family and another cheat...half an eclair from Starbucks together with a venti soy milk with a shot of hazelnut.

02/25/2006

Last day in Market Market!

Today was the last day of our booth in Market Market! I decided to do my best to stick to my diet. I ended up succeeding, but in an unexpected way. I ended up having only one meal for the whole day which consisted of 6 barbecue sticks from my favorite barbecue stand in Market Market at around 5:30 pm. For the rest of the day however, I ended up filling myself with a little more than my daily dose of liquids. At around noon, while everyone else was having their lunch, I finshed 3 500 ml bottles of soy milk from Fruit Magic. With the barbecue, a 500 ml bottle water of Viva. 2 cans of diet Pepsi while watching Memoirs of a Geisha in Gateway with my friends after Market Market! And finally a large order of Coke Light from McDonald's after the movie. Well, it was effective in sustaining mt hunger, but I don't think its healthy to keep continuing such a practice.

02/23/2006

Lack of Choices!

Serving in the go negosyo summit is proving to be quite a challenge for my diet. Its currently hard to find a place to eat that serves food that's low in carbs or friendly to any diet inside our malls. The result, it takes a lot of money to get filled without cheating or spending a whole lot of money.

I did a slight combination of both once again today. I did not cheat during my main meals for the day, but I did have a serving of Taro Ice with sago and taro pudding from Quickly today. I did not cheat outright in terms of carbs, but rather with sugar which is also not allowed in the low carb diet.

For my lunch though, I had 6 sticks of my favorite barbecue in Market Market together with a large Coke light from McDonald's. And for my dinner, I ate in Teriyaki Boy, which was where I really felt the blow to my wallet. I had an order of tamago sashimi, miso soup, Teriyaki Boy chicken and refillable Coke light (with 2 refills). However, without any rice, I was still a bit hungry, but didn't have much money left which prevented me from ordering any more.

Hopefully, I find better alternatives tomorrow, during our last day of manning our booth in the Go Negosyo entrepreneurship expo in Market Market!

02/23/2006

DAYA DAY!

Today, I cheated my diet for the first time. I had a hard time at the go negosyo summit at Market Market since there was hardly any place to eat at that followed my diet. My first cheat happened when I had a chocolate eclaire from Starbucks while waiting until my friends and I can enter the Every Nation building for the Go Negosyo today.

My second cheat occured while we were setting up our booth, I got thirsty and saw a Quickly stall. I suddenly had memories of their Taro Ice and Taro pudding and just couldn't resist the temptation.

For the rest of the day though, I still had enough self control to stick to low carb foods. For lunch, I ate 3 pcs. fried chicken from Max's with a diet Pepsi. And for dinner, I shared a can of Hot and Spicy Spam and some salted egg and tomatoes with my friend Patrick.

I just hope though, that I stick to minimal cheating for my next few days while managing our booth at Market Merket!

02/22/2006

The day my wallet and I lost weight.

Today is one of the days when I had quite a lot to eat.

I had a heavy brunch from Piquant consisting of 1 order of their tanigue steak in white wine sauce and an order of their grilled rosemary chicken with roasted tomato and cucumber sauce. I have always considered Piquant's food quite tasty, the only problem is its a bit too expensive to have everyday.

I also had a late lunch from Kitaro. Japanese has a lot of dishes friendly to my diet. Sadly, its also good in emptying one's wallet. But I really enjoyed the 2 orders of tamago, which I had with a yummy order of chicken teriyaki.

Finally, when I got home for dinner, I had some purefoods corned beef together with some hot & spicy spam and japanese mayonaise. After dinner, I had a little snack. I had a pack of salted cashews to give me a break from the peanuts which I stuffed myself with yesterday.

02/21/2006

I consider today as THE DAY I WENT NUTS!

Even I can't believe the amount of nuts that I had today. For my lunch, all I had were 2 packs of nicefoods nuts (1 chili and 1 garlic), 1 pack of growers savory hot nuts and a bottle of milk tea. When I got home, I had som beef steak w/ lots of onions, but still no rice. And for my late night snack (which is allowed in the low carb diet), I had a pack of Toby's garlic peanuts and a can of Century tuna in vegetable oil with some Knorr seasoning. All I drank for dinner was water...a lot of it. If I turn out not to have lost that much weight this week, the first thing I'll try cutting from my diet would have to be nuts.

02/20/2006

I'm sorry for the missed Sunday update. I've been pretty busy with workload that I just collapsed on my bed without being able to update last Sunday. I'll move my weight update as soon as the workload decreases.

For now, I'll just give a basic update on my continued low carb diet. I'm currently back on the first phase, which is the strictest phase of the diet. As much as possible, totally no carbs are allowed at this point. This phase lasts for the first two weeks and is the strictest part in terms of what's allowed and what's not, but you are allowed to eat as much and as often as you want and for most people, still lose weight fast.

Last Sunday, I had tomatoes (total of 6) and salted eggs (four) for lunch. For dinner, I ate in the Saisaki buffet in Glorietta with my family after Sunday mass. I had a total of four plates, having sashimi and their grilled chicken and sukiyaki beef in generous proportions.

Today (Monday), I had a total of four pcs original recipe from KFC (2 wings and 2 drumsticks) without the gravy. For my afternoon snack, I had a lot of Growers Savory Hot peanuts, which I brought with me and some of my friends asked for some as well. For dinner, I had two sticks of barbecue and a large bowl of corned beef.

I shall try to put my weight update entry during the week as soon as the heavy workload ends!

02/18/2006

My first blog entry for a span of two days. I'll also try improving it this time around by putting more pictures this time around.

02/15/2006

I officially start resuming my low carb diet today. For those who have forgotten or do not know yet, the first two weeks is actually the hardest part of the diet. Besides the fact of adjusting your food by cutting your carbohydrate (carb/s for short) intake, to which a lot of people are quite accustomed to, it is the strictest stage of the diet as well. During the first two weeks, any kind of carbs , as well as sugar, is strictly prohibited. This stage however, if followed properly, helps you to lose weight the fastest too, with some really incredible results for other people. After the first two weeks though, selected forms of carbs are slowly reintroduced into the list of allowed foods for a healthy way to continue losing weight.

One of the wonders of this diet is that unlike other diets where you can expect going hungry, which is also unhealthy, this diet allows you to eat as much and as often as you want and still allows you to lose weight without ever worrying about having to feel hungry. For my lunch today, I had something I had last when I was still on the diet...a box of six from KFC, but only original recipe is allowed because the breading of the hot and crispy consists of carbs. Also, their gravy gravy contains flour so it should be avoided as well. During my weighing earlier, I am currently 217 lbs, about 14 lbs heavier than when I was during the Christmas break which was when I stopped following the diet. Remember though that despite stopping the diet, I engaged myself in different physical activities namely badminton, boxing and capoeira each once a week totalling 3 regular exercises weekly. That doesn't include the passive activities such as walking around the mall, etc... Don't forget to check my progress updates during my Sunday blog entries.

02/14/2006

What a way to spend my birthday. I haven't been able to stick to any diet lately either. Ever since last Christmas break, I have simply been eating as much as I want of whatever I want! In my attempt to compensate for my non-diet stage, I engaged myself into more physical activities. I joined boxing regularly for PE every Tuesday, all the way from the warm-ups to the actual mitts training session and then finally end with the painstaking abdominal cooldowns. You can ask those who have joined me on how painful those abdominal sessions can get. Besides the boxing, I also joined Capoeira every Wednesday and Badminton with my friends every Thursday morning. Besides these workouts, I would also occasionally engage myself on my own ab workouts at home. Despite all these activities, my weight still continued to increase. I intend to take part in another round of dieting starting this Wednesday since I have personally witnessed that these diets really work. Besides helping me lose weight faster, I can't even maintain my weight with all the physical activity I am currently doing without the help of a proper diet. Thus, this Wednesday, I shall update my entry with my current weight and keep up my old entries of keeping track with my daily food intakes as well as a weekly update of my weight. Today was a pretty heavy day in terms of food intake though since its an early celebration of a certain birthday coming up in a little over an hour from now. I had tons of barbecue, baked macaroni personally made by my friend Cheers, a Tapa Queen, Sago't gulaman and sweet banana from Tapa King and finally a dinner with my family in Kaya.

steady weight

As I predicted yesterday, my weight was more or less maintained despite all the cheating I've done throughout the week. I'm currently on my weekend, but I was still in school from 11 am until 6 pm. I've been lacking sleep for the past few days and its not yet over for I still have a busy week next week. I had to prepare for a busy day though and ended up going to Starbucks 3 times today to help me stay up for the last full show in Greenbelt which lasted from 12 midnight to 1:30 am. Despite all the cheating I've done this week, I'm expecting not much of a difference in my weight from last week. I believe I should have more or less maintained my weight. With the first confirmation of a bird flu death in the country, I had mostly chicken today. I had my first meal at around 5:30 in KFC, which consisted of four pieces of original recipe chicken, no rice and no side dishes. For my snack, I had a small pack of "Boy Bawang" cornicks, which is allowed in the later stages of the carb control diet, but I shouldn't have yet since I gained a bit of weight during the holiday break. For dinner, I ate with my aunt, mom and sister who shared two orders of hot wings from Yellow Cab. I didn't have a boxing session today so I decided to have a little walk (around 30 mins long). We shall see my progress this Sunday, hopefully I lose the weight I gained during the holiday break.

11/06/05

Its been a while since my last entry due to a very busy week. It was pretty hard to stay strictly on my diet as well since we spent most of the time outside the house and although increasing in number, there still aren't that much carb control diet friendly places to eat in when out of the house. Last Nov. 1, while at the cemetery, I couldn't fully resist and gave in to some of the foods that aren't allowed such as the puto and chocolates. But I still had enough control not to eat rice with the crispy pata. I also had a few hot chocolates (McDonald's and Starbucks) throughout the week. I had a little cheating today as well.

Today's menu

Lunch
Corned Beef
Brown Rice

Dinner
Ebi tempura (3 pcs)
Futo maki (1 pc)
Calfornia maki (2 pcs)
Miso soup
Kajiki sashimi
Rib eye (misono)
Lapu lapu (misono)
Prawns (misono)
Oysters (misono)
mixed vegetables (misono)
Coke light

Dessert
12 oz. Hot vanilla (Coffee bean and tea leaf)

Weekly Update

Oct 30 (214 lbs)
Nov 6 (215 lbs)

Although I gained a pound, I don't cosider it too bad despite the amount I've been eating throughout the week long holiday despite having nearly no physical activity and the little bits of cheating I did. I will however try to lessen, but still not eliminate the amount of allowed carbo intake I consume (brown/red rice, whole grain bread, etc...)

10/30/05

This week wasn't a good week for my diet and I paid the price. I cheated on a number of occasions throughout the week with a number of Starbucks hot chocolates here and a hot & crispy with gravy from KFC (original recipe is allowed but Hot & Crispy isn't because of the breading). Not to mention that I already eat brown rice w/ almost every meal w/c we can already expect to slow down my weight loss by a bit. Together w/ minimal physical activity, it was not a good time to "cheat" my diet at all.

Weight Update

Starting weight (Oct 3): 231 lbs
Last week (Oct 23): 211 lbs
Present weight (Oct 30): 214 lbs

*lesson: Make up for cheating with more physical activity or as much as possible, don't cheat. It was a combination of hard work (which the carb control diet aims to minimize) and unsuccessful following of the diet. We had a field trip to Quiapo and Divisoria today and getting food that is allowed by the diet was not easy. I had to be there early and as a result, I missed my breakfast. Upon getting there, my friends and I stayed in Jollibee to wait for the others. While they were having their brunch, all I ordered was a medium Coke light. I also couldn't find allowed food on the way resulting in a slight cheat on my diet. Finally, a busy day led me to have my dinner at around 9:45 pm and my dessert/late snack at 10:45 pm. We shall see how bad this affects my weight loss progress during my weekend update this Sunday.

My Menu for Today:

Brunch
Medium Coke light (Jollibee)

Lunch
Hotdog on a stick
Taho (cheating due to the sugar in the syrup)

Dinner
Sirloin Steak with ground pepper and Carb Control steak sauce (2 servings)
Brown Rice

Dessert
Low fat milk w/ Splenda

10/26/05

Once again, I spent most of my day out of the house. I was in greenhills from 10:30 am where I ate my brunch together with some friends at Penang Hill at the Promenade. I went to CIE back at the RCBC after, where I had a heavy afternoon snack. Then finally, I went home where I had my dinner. I am starting to increase my brown rice intake, having 2 servings yesterday as well as today. I shall keep track of my weight loss during my update blog this Sunday.

My Menu for Today:

Brunch
Gado Gado Salad (radish, bean sprouts, tofu and cucumbers with thai peanut dressing)
Sprite Light

Afternoon Snack
Grilled Rosemary Chicken (Piquant)
Brown rice
Sprite Light

Dinner
Pork Spare Ribs w/ Carb Control bbq sauce (5 pcs)
Brown Rice

Additional info: More and more restaurants are starting to cater to the South Beach diet with special menus you have to specifically ask for. I got there at 10:30 am and arrived left at around 9:30 pm. I brought breakfast which I had cooked from home, but still ended up eating a lot in school. I also had another grande serving of hot chocolate from starbucks, which is most probably once again raising my sugar level and raising the insulinlevel in my body, which carb control dieters don't want or like. I will have to start controlling this again and resort to using splenda like I used to at the beginning of my diet.

My menu for today:

Breakfast
Cheese Omelette (3 eggs)
Bacon

Lunch
Tanigue w/ a White Wine and Corriander sauce (Piquant)
Brown Rice

Afternoon Snack
Hot Chocolate (Starbucks)

Dinner
Hoisin glazed Porkloin w/ Mashed Sweet Potato (Piquant)
Yoghurt Cheesecake

Late Dinner
Ribeye steak w/carb control steak sauce

10/24/05

As I have mentioned before, the outstanding results of the carb control diet has been pretty inspiring for me. I have been inspired both in continuing my diet as well as trying more pysical activities to continue my weight loss. In effect, I am more confident in eating the carbs allowed by the South Beach diet while knowing that I will still continue to lose weight, although at a slightly slower pace than before. I am, however, enabled to a wider variety of food, thus making it easier for me to stay at the diet longer than I have with any other diet I have tried before, resulting in more weight loss and longer, if not permanent maintenance of my ideal weight when I reach it eventually.

My menu for today:
Lunch
Broiled tuna steak (piquant)
Brown rice
Hot Chocolate (Starbucks)

Dinner
Steak (rib eye) with Carb control bbq sauce and steak sauce (2 servings)
Hard boiled eggs (2 servings)

Late Snack
Low Fat milk w/ Splenda

Physical Activity for the day: Boxing

10/23/05

As promised, every Sunday I shall input a progress report to monitor my weight loss on my carb control diet. I admit that I have been doing some extra physical activities during my last two weeks (about 3x a week ever since the weekend after my first week on the diet) but even with regular exercise, you expect weight to go down by around 1 or 2 pounds a week. So the extra weight I have lost, I still credit to my diet.

With Clothes On:
Initial weight (Oct 3): 231 lbs
After phase 1/induction stage (Oct 16): 218 lbs
Present weight (Oct 23: 211 lbs

Besides my personal knowledge of how much weight I have lost, I have also been receiving a lot of comments from friends, both those I see everyday and those that I haven't seen for quite a while, about my figure being noticeably thinner. And believe me, its pretty encouraging to continue the diet when you get such results as comments and actually noticing that you are once again starting to fit in those clothes that you have already outgrown. Although I was not able to take a picture right before starting my diet, I'll try looking for the most recent pics before then (probably a few days before) and post them together with pics I'll take now so that you may compare for yourselves any differences.

10/22/05 part II

I decided to create this entry due to a special request by Chan, one of my friends who was inspired to give it a try after seeing my progress! Also, he allows such poultry as duck and chicken dark meat while South Beach does not. Another difference would be the vegetables, he is stricter and allows a few such as turnips, lettuce, spinach and the like, but not tomatoes, eggplants and most of the rest.

10/22/05

I've decided to post two entries for today. For breafast, I had two servings of grilled eggplant with some knorr seasoning. For my lunch, I finally tried a different dish from Piquant besides my regular broiled tuna steak, I tried their Rosemary Chicken and it was great as well. I ate with Chan, who is a classmate of mine and he tried the Spicy Porkchop and told me that it was pretty good too. For my dinner, I had two chicken drumsticks cooked by turbo broiler to lessen the oil together with a sauce consisting of a mix of jap mayo, crushed garlic and some knorr seasoning. I also had tilapia and pechay together with the chicken. For my late dessert, I had a glass of Nestle low fat milk, this time with no Splenda added for a slight change.

10/20/05

I haven't been successfully following the ideal setup of the carb control diet lately. A person undergoing this diet is strongly recommended to eat 6 times a day consisting of: breakfast, morning snack, lunch, afternoon snack, dinner and late dessert. My menu for today merely consisted of breakfast (cheese omelette), dinner (tilapia, chili tuna and pechay) and finally some soy milk for my late dessert. Soy milk, together with low and non-fat milk is the allowed liquid forms of dairy products. One thing I try to be sure about is to take the recommended amount of liquid intake daily. One good feedback for me though is that I have been getting lots of comments about my noticeable decrease in size since the time I began the diet just a little over half a month ago. I shall try to post some pictures during my update entry this Sunday.

10/19/05

Just a few more tips on continuing weight loss while doing the phase 2 stage of the diet. You should remember to continue maintaining a proper amount of water intake daily. Simple exercise such as walking, although not required, also helps to speed up the weight loss process and will lead to reaching your target weight faster.
I started the diet at a weight of 231 on Oct. 3 and am trying to reach my target of 200 lbs before Christmas. I have been more active lately by walking more often and trying out different sports every once in a while such as boxing, tennis and badminton and I am down to around 212 lbs already, but I am over the fastest part of weight loss of the diet, which were the first two weeks. As you can see, although I expect to lose weight slower now, I still have around two months to lose the remaining 12 lbs, which doesn't seem that impossible after seeing the effects of my first two weeks.

10/18/05

For the 1st time after over two weeks, I finally had my first legal serving of carbohydrates today. As I mentioned in yesterday's entry, the South Beach diet allows certain fruits and carbohydrates to be reintroduced back into one's diet starting the 2nd phase of the diet. Once again, I had lunch at Piquant in RCBC and had their Broiled Tuna Steak with Chilled Horseradish Cream Sauce, but this time I had a serving of brown rice, which together with wild rice is the only kind of rice allowed. But even if the amount of the allowed carbohydrates by the South Beach diet is more generous than that of Atkins, control in the amount of intake is still strongly recommended until you reach your target weight. For this reason, all I had for dinner was my regular tuna mayo together with beansprouts, eggplant, diced tomatoes and some salted egg, no carbs once again.

10/17/05

For me, today is the start of what the South Beach diet calls Phase 2 and for Atkins, the basic reduction and pre-maintenance stages of the diet. This means that the rules on what to eat start to get a bit lighter, but you can expect to continue losing weight anyway (at a slower pace of course). This is where the two become a bit different. Atkins allows you to re-introduce your carbs at this stage, but strictly little by little. South Beach on the other hand has a different approach, it allows you more generous amounts of carb intake, while being stricter on the kinds of carbs allowed. I on the other hand, intend to experiment on a kind of compensation between the two diets. I'll continue to post updates on my progress every weekend.

substitutes for South Beach

10/16/05

Today is the last day of the strictest part of the carb control diet for me. Atkins refers to this as the induction stage and South Beach calls it Phase 1. This refers to the first two weeks upon starting the diet and is the strictest part for both diets. Most, if not all forms of carbohydrates and sugars are not allowed during this stage, except South Beach allows a lot of vegetables during these two weeks. I started my phase 1/induction stage on the 3rd of Oct. and get to move on to the next part of the diet starting tom. Now, I intend to share different observations during my two week experience.

Initial weight (Oct 3): 231 lbs.
Present weight (Oct 16): 218 lbs.

Tips:
-use (allowed) substitutes such as zero-low carb sauces (e.g. Carb Options products, Splenda, Diet Coke, etc...)
-remember that you are allowed to eat whenever you're hungry as long as you eat foods that are allowed
-If possible, be more active (e.g. walking, aerobic exercises, sports, etc...) for even faster/greater results

10/15/05

Today was the healthiest variation of my diet so far. I managed to avoid cheating the whole day despite having eaten out for lunch, which is a bit hard to do when doing the carb control diet (not cheating while eating out). It was another Saturday afternoon spent with my friends and we ate in a small restaurant called Little Shop and I had an order of fish fillet and an order of eggplant which I ate together (the eggplant serving as a kind of substitute for my carbo intake). For dinner, I just ate at home. I had a whole bangus, which I ate together with tuna cooked in garlic and a few pieces of spanish sardines in tomato sauce. Although I was not able to consume much vegetables and fiber, my protein and fat intake for the day all came from fish which is also pretty healthy.

10/14/05

Its my 11th day on the diet and three days to go before the strictest part of my diet is over. Its my first cheat so far as well. For lunch, I had an order of KFC's garden salad (ceasar) and an order of their asian salad as well. I took out all the croutons, but couldn't help but put in some (about half) of the dressing. The asian salad dressing has a hint of sweet taste, which most probably means that it contains some sugar, which is not allowed in the diet. For dinner, I ate with my friends in Gloria Maris where I had an order of shrimp dumpling (whose dimsum wrapper isn't allowed as well) and a small serving of fish fillet and beancurd hotpot. I also forgot to have my other snacks today as well.

piquant

10/13/05

I tried the food from the restaurant named Piquant located at the third floor of the RCBC building for my lunch today. I tried their Broiled Tuna Steak w/ Chilled Horseradish Cream Sauce with a bottle of mineral water which cost me a total of Php165.00 total. For my afternoon snack, I had a bowl of tuna w/ mayo. For my dinner, I had not one, but two servings of steak together with some Carb Control steak sauce. For my evening snack, I had some celery with cream cheese due to a personal feeling of lack of fiber intake for the day. I finally ended my day with some low-fat milk with Splenda before going to bed.

10/12/05

Today's food has had the most variation so far this week. This is mostly due to the difference in my lunch. It is the first time I have eaten out this week. I had lunch with my friends which consisted of a variation of shared orders including: 1) Beef w/ broccoli & mushrooms, 2) Pepper-garlic squid and 3) Lapu-lapu w/ tofu. For dinner, I had salpicao together with a bowl of monggo. For my snacks, I had a serving of celery with cream cheese like yesterday and for my late snack, a glass of low-fat milk w/ Splenda.
